- (1930- )Born in Jerusalem, Tsaban was a member of the Hagana from 1945 to 1947 and of the Palmah from 1948 to 1949. He helped to found Kibbutz Zorah. He served as a member of Maki and helped to found the Moked and Shelli political movements. Tsaban joined Mapam in 1980 and represented it in the Knesset (and subsequently the Meretz/Democratic Israel faction) since 1981. He served as minister of immigration (see ALIYA) between 1992 and 1996 and retired from party politics prior to the election to the 14th Knesset in 1996. After his retirement from politics, Tsaban resumed his career as an academic and in 2000 he initiated the publication of The Encyclopedia of Jewish Culture in the Era of Modernization and Secularization.
